Car Seat Safety: Be Informed, Be Prepared

The CDC, says crashes are the number one cause of death among children in the US. Specifically, “in the United States, 663 children ages 12 years and younger died as occupants in motor vehicle crashes during 2015, and more than 121,350 were injured in 2014.”

That’s why it is important to not only understand the pertinence of car seat safety but stay up-to-date on specifications as your child grows, so your most precious cargo will be safe.

State laws can differ from professional recommendations. The law for the State of Texas states that “all children younger than 8 years old, unless taller than 4’9″, are required to be in the appropriate child safety seat system wherever they ride in a passenger vehicle.”

The TX Department of Transportation promotes the guidelines suggested by the American Pediatric Association which state:

• From birth to 35 pounds (and 2+ years of age), a child’s safety seat should be rear-facing.

• When children reach the two-year limit and have outgrown the rear-facing safety seat, up to the upper height or weight limit (40 – 80+ pounds) they should be in a forward-facing safety seat.

• Booster seats should be incorporated once a child reaches age four and is 40+ pounds and they have a certain level of behavior maturity.

• Usually, around age 10 to 12, children are able to use adult lap/shoulder safety belts as long as these restraints fit them properly.

Whether you are expecting a new family member or you have a growing child(ren) in your family, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation of your child’s car seat.

You already know the importance of properly installed safety seats for your child but did you know, in Texas, the second largest number of fatalities from crashes came from the second (back) seat, which is where most informed parents have their children’s car seats secured?

The Midland Fire Department is offering services to parents to help ensure that your child is safe by providing free car seat and installation guidance.

Presently, the MFD has two specially-trained personnel who are experts in car seat installation and safety. Whether you have an existing car seat or are expecting a child, these experts offer – free of charge – direction, guidance, and instructions on how to properly have your child secured.

They are offering this service by appointment Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm. Here is what you would need:

• Bring your children with you.

This enables the experts to evaluate – according to the safest practices – their height, weight, and needs when it comes to installation of your child restraint seat.

• Bring the car or booster seat with you.

This will allow them to properly install the car/booster seat and/or instruct you as to whether or not the car/booster seat you have, is suitable for your child. There are so many different car seats and boosters to choose from, so getting an expert opinion is the best option for your child. 

The MFD asks that you call them to make an appointment to make sure you receive their full attention and instruction.

An important thing to know is whether or not your child’s car seat is safe. There have been countless recalls of child safety seats in history so it’s important that you research and know which seats are the safest for your child.
